Overview

Premiering at Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asian Conference on September 9th 2013 and releasing on September 1st, 2015 in North America, this installment in the Danganronpa series takes place between the first and second game.
For the first time the series has a female protagonist – Komaru Naegi, the younger sister of the protagonist of the first game, Makoto Naegi. Also appearing in the game as a selectable character is Toko Fukawa.
Plot
Komaru Naegi is a normal highschool girl, aside from the fact that she’s locked in a 2-bedroom apartment with no escape and no interaction with the outside world aside from some mysterious benefactor who provides her three meals a day through a slot by the door. One day, her apartment is attacked by a robotic Monokuma, when she is saved by Byakuya Togami from the Future Foundation. However, her rescue is cut short when she is kidnapped by a group of kids calling themselves the “Warriors of Hope,” former students from Hope’s Peak Academy’s Elementary School Division who have decided to purge Towa City of all adults with the use of Monokuma robots. Having been dropped into a city where her only ally is a serial killer with a split personality, Komaru tries to reunite with the Future Foundation before the Warriors of Hope complete their master plan.
Gameplay
Unlike the first two Danganronpa games, Ultra Despair Girls is more of an action game where the player takes the role of Komaru. Komaru wields a megaphone-shaped weapon that can fire energy bolts that can destroy the Monokuma bots or manipulate the environment. Komaru must use this weapon to destroy her enemies, sometimes by directly shooting them in their glowing eye, sometimes by manipulating the environment or other Monokumas to do the job for her.
After meeting Touko, the player can also switch to Genocide Jack and destroy enemies using her scissor-based melee attacks while Komaru is controlled by AI. However, Genocide Jack can only be used for so long before the battery power runs out and she turns back into Touko, while control returns to Komaru.
